In 2008 I bought tickets to take my twin’s oldest daughter to a Pearl Jam concert. As I’m a Pearl Jam fan, and I communicate with other fans through the Pearl Jam fan forum, I wanted to make sure we were visible to those fans that I had planned to meet. I thought that wearing orange Orioles t-shirts would be the best way to stick out.
When I posted on the Orioles fan page for advice on where to find Orioles t-shirts online I wasn’t able to find a Web site with the merchandise I wanted. However, when I posted the question to the Pearl Jam fan forum I received many quality responses.
In a similar vein in 2011 I was planning on running a marathon. To bring myself luck I wanted to buy a Pearl Jam St. Christopher key chain, the one with St. Christopher holding a guitar. I had wanted it for a while, and I finally had a *good* reason to buy it. Unfortunately, when I decided to buy it, the key chain wasn’t sold anymore.
I posted about this on the Pearl Jam fan forum, and within a couple weeks a fellow Pearl Jam fan sent me one of her extra Pearl Jam St. Christopher key chains. Although I didn’t run the marathon, I took that key chain on many coffee adventures.
I’m not just grateful for the t-shirt advice or the key chain, I’m very grateful for the immediate goodwill shown to me by other Pearl Jam fans. As it’s nearing the close of the day I’ll just voice what is noted on the back of my Pearl Jam keychain, “Safe Travels”.
